How to use the tuner

  1. Press Start and allow the microphone. The sound is analysed on your device and never recorded.
  2. Play one note and let it ring. The big letter is the nearest note; the needle shows how far off you are in cents (hundredths of a semitone).
  3. Tighten the string if the needle leans left (flat), loosen it if it leans right (sharp), until the arc turns green.

Pick your instrument in the list to see its strings: the tuner then lights the string you are playing and tells you how far it is from its note. For the finest adjustments, switch on Strobe: the bands stand still when the note is exactly in tune, and drift left or right when it is flat or sharp.

Reference pitch and temperaments

Most music today tunes A4 to 440 Hz. Orchestras often use 442 or 443 Hz, and baroque ensembles 415 Hz: set the Reference A4 to match. Under More settings you can also tune to historical temperaments (just intonation, Pythagorean, quarter-comma meantone, Werckmeister III, Vallotti) in any key, show note names as C D E, with German H, or as Do Ré Mi, and read notes for B♭, E♭ and F instruments.
